Linksys WRT54GS v4

Tarifa is a replacement firmware for the Linksys WRT54GL gateway/router. It adds a list of features, solves bugs and increases range and speed.

Installing is easy, you can flash (and flash it back) via the web interface, it looks and works just like the original Linksys firmware.

Since more people are getting a fast internet connection, the need for high performance is growing. This firmware addresses this issue, by letting the NAT-firewall work as efficient as possible, especially when a lot of connections are made by P2P programs.

It raises the limit of maximum simultaneous connections. The Linux 2.4.20 kernel is patched with CAN-2003-187, to prevent Netfilter to fail to identify connections and with CAN-2003-0244 to patch a flaw in several hash table implementations. The hash table algoritm is upgraded from the standard Linux lookup2 to lookup3 to improve performance.

For automatic and easy port forwarding, the router uses MiniUPnPd, this is an advanced UPnP and NAT-PMP server. Apple Mac OS X uses NAT-PMP, but this is not limited to Apple Mac, some applications like utorrent supports both. For larger networks, it can clean unused rules automatic.

The main feature of the router is the wireless interface to connect to wireless clients. Tarifa firmware increases the wireless range, by raising the transmit power. An external antenna can also be connected and selected by the firmware. For larger networks routers can be added and linked wirelessly by the WDS system.
